Inspired by the lives of Phoebe and Alice Cary, famous authors of the 1850’s, Advanced Women questions the sacrifice of love and family for career and independence. The drama covers thirty years in their lives.

Michèle Aldin Kushner is the 2009 winner of the Todd McNereny Playwriting Prize from the College of Charleston for her drama, Advanced Women and the play will be given a staged reading at the 2010 Piccolo Spoleto Festival, SC. Advanced Women was also read at Luna Stage’s New Moon Reading Series, November 2008. Michèle was previously named one of "three Fringe Festival playwrights to watch" in the Backstage article, Breakout Talent – Writers on the Rise, after the critically acclaimed production of her play, Dear America, at the Flea Theatre as part of the New York International Fringe Festival, August 2006. Her comedy, The Program, premiered in FringeNYC 2007. Her play, 31 BOND, was commissioned by and produced at the Brooklyn Lyceum, NY, in 2002 and took part in the National Alliance of American Actors Playreading Festival at the Soho Theatre in London, England, June 2007. Her musical with composer/ lyricist Keith Gordon had a November 2006 reading in Dixon Place's Warning Not For Broadway Festival. Her other plays and musicals have been commissioned/read/produced in NYC and LA; Michèle has received the Alfred P. Sloan Award for her screenplay, 11 Months, and an MFA from NYU Tisch School of the Arts, Dramatic Writing Program.
